Dear Friends,
Father and Son Accept Christ Tonight (1/26/2015)
Andrew and I just arrived home from our Bible Study with Rodrigo and Alefer, father and brother of Alex who is a member of our church. At the end of our forth study both father and son accepted Christ. Rodrigo with tears in his eyes openly confessed that that he needed the Lord to save him before he ever prayed. Each of them shed tears of joy for what Christ had done for them.
"There is joy in the presence of the angles of God over one sinner that repenteth". Luke 15:10
Family Camp
From the 16th through the 18th Victory Baptist held its annual Family Camp. Our speaker was Matt and Tiffany Herbster from the Wilds of North Carolina. Most of our families are new converts so a fresh look at what God says to fathers, mothers and children was a welcomed experience for our church. On Sunday husbands and wives gave testimony of how they understood the principles outlined in God's Word about their responsibilities. We are thankful for the Herbster's investment in our church.
English Camp
On Tuesday English Camp began at Camp Betel in Sao Paulo. I had the opportunity to preach in English for three days on New Beginnings. Speaking to Brazilians in English was not an easy task as you might think it would be. When you see Brazilian faces the mind clicks into Portuguese. I believe the Lord used the challenges to strengthen Christians and encourage change in their lives.
Head Gasket
On Tuesday I took Matt and Tiffany to the bus station and then I started my trek to Sao Paulo. Just before I pulled up to the first toll booth my van made a noise and then stopped running. After pushing it for about 100 yards to pay the toll I took a look under the hood and found oil leaking from the engine. The head gasket blew and the car is now in the shop. Thank you for praying for our safety as we minister in Brazil.

Dear Friends,
A Year of Thankfulness
No matter how we evaluate our year, positive or negative, God has consistently showered us with more blessings than we deserve. Here a just a few of those things we are grateful for: Good health, daily provisions, adults / teens and children saved this year, construction projects completed, people that gave to those projects, God’s protection, organization of our church, faithful co-workers, our sons and their wives serving the Lord, Andrew and Anna’s baptism, 29 years of faithful support from churches and individuals and relatively good health of our parents in the States.
“Perhaps it takes a purer faith to praise God for unrealized blessings than for those we once enjoyed or those we enjoy now.”
- A.W. Tozer
Christmas Cantata/End of the Year Activities
After three months of weekly practices three of the churches in Sorocaba performed the Cantata during the Christmas season. On the 21st our church was filled to capacity and 15 or more people stood in the back or outside of the building. I have already begun a Bible study with one of the men who came that evening. Pray for the salvation of Rodrigo.
The church family spent December 31st together sharing testimonies, a challenge from God’s Word and a wonderful meal. The tradition in Brazil is that most families prepare a meal for after midnight. When the New Year arrives fireworks all over the city are being displayed. Our church spent the evening together until 11:00pm and then most went on to their family’s festivities.
New Addition to our Team
A few months ago Ben and I asked Pastor Sidnei to consider working with our team. He spent almost 3 months praying and seeking the Lord over the decision. Last week he told us that his family had peace about working at Victory Baptist Church. We are grateful that when we return for furlough this year his family will be in place to help the ministry in our absence.

Moving a Piano
Eighteen years ago we purchased a piano for our home. Many private lessons and practices have been done around this instrument. Last Saturday 8 men from our church arrived at our home and carried the piano down a flight of steps and onto our trailer and into the church fellowship hall. For the first time our church has sung along with a "real" piano. The sound is beautiful!
Practice for the Cantata
For three months Faith, Victory and New Life Baptist Churches have practicing weekly for the Christmas Cantata. The children of our church will sing and quote verses during the presentation. We are praying that visitors will come and that the true meaning of Christmas will be presented in the three churches.
Plaster of Paris
Do you remember using Plaster of Paris as a kid? Well, here in Brazil we put it on our walls. It brings a nice finish to a somewhat ugly block wall. Once the job was done the men of the church helped sand and paint the fellowship hall where we meet. Take a look at the video to see our "new" building.

A Growing Church
A few weeks ago I mentioned that the adult SS class was growing. Last evening the Lord blessed with 56 people in the service. A number of unsaved came to church last night. Pray for these adults: Josemar, Cristina, Rodrigo, Alefer, Tatiane, Adao, Mateus and Franciele.
Thank you for praying for our ministry and we ask that you especially pray for our Christmas Cantata that the message of Christ coming to earth to save sinners will be clear to all who hear.
Merry Christmas!

Growing Sunday School Class
Yesterday in the adult SS class 15 people came to study God's Word. Our lessons recently have been on the Holy Spirit's work in the heart of a lost person as well as our need to be involved in missions. Six of those in the picture below are new converts. Never had this many before in the class so I asked if they all would be willing to sign a contract to come to all SS class times. I got a chuckle out that one!
Youth Rally
On Saturday we took five teenagers to our bi-monthly Youth Rally for our regional churches. Seven churches in all participated with a total of 80 youth. The message was on being "An Example of the Believers" from I Timothy 4. We have a small group but we are encouraged by the steps of growth they are taking. Recently Alex shared with me that he quit playing soccer with his team so that he could attend Sunday School. Grateful for the Lord working in his heart.
Assisting our 2nd Church Plant
Recently I have been helping New Life Baptist Church in filling the pulpit and advising on their search for a new pastor. For the past year and 5 months I preach and administer the Lord's Supper about every 6 weeks. May I ask you to pray as this church searches for a pastor that would lead them?

Painting
Two volunteers from our church showed up on Monday to help paint the back of the church building. Soon we will have the church name and service time painted on the 33' x 39' foot wall. The sign will be visible to all the traffic on the main avenue that runs through the center of our 30,000 plus neighborhood.
Couples and Adult Activity
On Friday of last week 20 adults came for a meal and fun for the evening. Watching adults roll toilet paper around a "victim" was quite amusing. I think the women have more talent than the men. Two unsaved husbands and one unsaved wife attended. Pray for Luis Fernando, Mateus and Franciele.
Thank you for taking a moment to pray today!

Friends,
Weather
The temperatures in Sorocaba have varied from over a 100 down to 50 in just a matter of a few days. The storms have swept through the city as the two extremes meet each other. On the way to church last week a small twister moved down the avenue near our home picking up everything in its path and hurling it into the air.
It is so good to know that when the storms of life come our way Christ is our solid Rock and He is our Fortress.
Church Attendance
In spite of it being an election day our services were well attended yesterday. The unsaved continue to come and we continue to have Bible studies with each of them. Pray for the salvation of Adao, Franciele, Mateus, Jade, Jamile, Murilo, Leandro and Amanda.
Bible Study Students
I have shared with you about Tiago and Gizele and the spiritual steps they have taken in the past month. Last week he asked if there was a Bible seminary in our town that he could take theology classes. His interest in scripture continues to grow.
Tiago has been sharing with his parents about our church and the Bible studies. Both parents are very committed to a legalistic church system and have been so since childhood. Recently Tiago heard that his father had mentioned to his mother that he had learned more in the past three months from Pastor Shawn than all of his years in the Congregation of Christ church. Mind you, I have not had the opportunity to teach them until yesterday morning when the parents came to Sunday school. So actually the teaching has come from Tiago and Gizele. God is working in their heart. Please pray for Josemar and Cristina.

Friends,
Children's Day
Instead of Grandparents Day Brazil has Dia da Crianca. Our classes were combined for Sunday School, a story was told, games were played and presents were distributed to all the children. Pray for Jade. Yesterday as she arrived for SS she came to the pulpit to greet me and I asked her when she was going to accept Christ as her Savior. Jade is 13 and has been coming to our church for two years. Lately we have sensed that the Lord is working in her heart. I asked what was holding her back from the decision and her answer was "I am not sure that I will be able to make right choices".
Pray for Mateus and Franciele
Mateus and Franciele have been coming to church in the last few months. This evening (Monday 13th) I will visiting with them. Donna has done Bible studies with Franciele over the last two months. Pray for the salvation of this couple.

Dear Friends,
I have a blessing to share and an urgent prayer request.
The Blessing
Tiago and Gizele both gave their testimony of salvation in church on Sunday. They were clear in their presentation that they had trusted in their good works and a system of legalistic religion. We are grateful they wanted to share their new found faith in Christ. Pray for their spiritual growth.
Urgent Prayer Request
A 13 year old girl that attends our church faithfully was kidnapped yesterday from her school. Our family is watching her little sister as her parents have spent most of their time at the police investigation unit last night and this morning. Just 30 minutes ago this girl called me terrified, locked in a room with little clothes. I spoke with her about God's protection and sang "How can I fear" to her on the phone. Pray with us that this situation can be resolved and that she will be safe during this situation.
Thank you for praying.

Dear Friends,
First Baptism and Organization of Victory Baptist
A little over two years ago we started Victory Baptist Church in a garage with just a handful of people. Yesterday our church baptized 7 adults and 2 children. During the service the charter members signed our doctrinal statement and a visiting pastor prayed for each new member to faithfully serve the Lord. Four other churches celebrated this day with us as they played their instruments and brought special music. Our son Shawn gave the challenge to the church via Skype and many were encouraged by the sermon. We praise the Lord and Him only for the work that has been established in this region of our city.
Salvation of a Young Couple
In July we met Tiago and Gizele through an English school while a team from Bible Baptist in Mathews, NC was in Sorocaba. As a result this couple visited church and soon I was doing a weekly Bible study with them from the book of John which we have recently finished. Two weeks ago a Tiago while reading the book of John at home said that his heart was heavy not having assurance of eternal life. He bowed his head with the Bible in his lap and accepted Christ. The next week at our study he shared this with both myself and his wife. Gizele went home that day frustrated that for many years she had trusted in her baptism and an adherence to a legalistic church system. For two days she battled with what to do. On Saturday while watching the movie "God's Not Dead" ( they briefed me on what the movie was about) she realized that she was fighting the very One who wanted to save her from sin. They paused the movie and she prayed and accepted the Lord. She tried to share everything with me at a recent Bible study but her husband was so excited that he couldn't help cutting in and sharing the details.
Construction
In our last update I mentioned the need we have to complete some construction projects. One church has responded and desires to help. Thank you Old Carriage Road Baptist Church for your concern for missions.
In the last month our building has changed drastically. The walls of the upstairs are up and the future auditorium is covered. Take a look at the video to see how God has blessed.

Youth Activity
Two Saturdays ago we had a combined youth activity with two other smaller churches similar to our church. 32 teens came to play "flag football" and "two liter bowling". It was a lot of fun watching kids run with a football. For every strike they were given a free can of Coke. This made the lower end of talent a cause for faster rolling basketballs. Wow! A challenge from God's Word was given to the many youth who have no reinforcements at home to encourage them in their walk with God.
The Salvation of Jennifer
For almost two years Giovanna and her sister Jennifer have been coming to SS and church. Their mother Fernanda accepted Christ in July of 2013. Because the girls had never been to an evangelical church their Bible knowledge was zero. We have requested prayer for the children on many occasions knowing that the Holy Spirit needed to His work in their hearts. Jennifer two Sundays ago declared openly in the middle of her SS class that she wanted to accept Christ. Last Sunday evening after the service she sought out the pastors wife and asked to talk. Jennifer,10, repented of her sin and asked Christ to be her Savior. Thank you for praying for these children.

Dear Friends,
Baby Dedication
In actuality we presented 3 babies and dedicated the parents to the wonderful privilege of raising children for God's glory. The 3 baby boys made us all chuckle at times with their playful actions during the service. For our new believers this was an opportunity for them to learn that children our an heritage from the Lord.. Others commented that this was an encouragement for them to see the emphasis the Bible places on rearing children.
Visitors
A total of 9 first-time visitors attended service last evening. Following our worship we had a "Noite de Soupa" (Soup Night). Fellowship time is important for these new converts as well as those unsaved that continue to come. I had the opportunity to speak with Celso and Sandra, parents of a young girl that has attended for two years. Leia came as well. She has cancer and is half way through her Chemo treatments. She is unsaved along with her two sons (Felipe and Gustavo) that come to Sunday school. Pray for the lost!
Thank you for praying this week for the work here in Sorocaba.

The Lizard
On Sunday Donna asked for the lizard that lurked around our house for a few weeks to be caught and taken away. So we took the creature in a bag to church to let him go in the field. When he came out of the bag he ran across Andrew's leg and he screamed. Donna noticed that he was squirming during the announcements and song time. Half way through the service he signals for me to take him to the bathroom. He says "Dad, some thing is moving in my pants". We did a "thorough" search and found nothing. When church ended Andrew would not get out of his seat. I reached down and felt around his back pocket and there it was a lizard head between the folds of his pants. Soon we found ourselves in the bathroom again taking off the pants to pull out the suffocated 9 inch lizard. Believe me we have laughed as Andrew recounted the story to his brothers on Skype.
Bible Study
Last week I mentioned about a Bible study with Tiago and Gizele. We studied from the book of John and when Tiago realized that his years of faithful attendance to a church did not give him any righteous standing before God he asked the following question. "My grandfather served faithfully till his death in this church. So are you saying that this is nothing to God?"
We turned to Romans 4 and I explained that Abraham was justified by his faith not by his works. This was a hard pill for Tiago to swallow. But in the end he said "I understand and I see that in the Bible".
Construction
Just a few more days and the walls will be completed and the roof tiles can be secured in place. Again, pray for God's provision for these projects.
Family
Our son Jordan finished his church internship at Bible Baptist in Mathews, NC and today he returns for his last semester of Bible college. Would you pray with us that the Lord would bless his studies as well as his ministry to college students and in the local church he serves?
We are thankful for your concern for our ministry,
Shawn

Just a few more days and the walls will be completed and the roof tiles can be secured in place. Again, pray for God's provision for these projects.
Family
Our son Jordan finished his church internship at Bible Baptist in Mathews, NC and today he returns for his last semester of Bible college. Would you pray with us that the Lord would bless his studies as well as his ministry to college students and in the local church he serves?
We are thankful for your concern for our ministry,
Shawn

Dear Friends,
Father's Day in Brazil
On Saturday the 9th, the ladies of our church made a wonderful supper for each of the fathers and their children, Thirteen fathers came and of those 6 need Christ as their Savior. Pray for Ezekias, Vanderson, Celso, Adao, Leandro and Itamar.

Bible Studies
This week I will start three more Bible studies. Tiago and Gizele are the owners of Fisk English school. We visited them in their home last week and Sunday evening they attended church. We were also in the home of Leandro and Amanda and their study will begin this Saturday. Both of these couples need Christ. So pray that the Lord will use these evangelistic studies to reach their heart. Diana was saved over a year ago but has been limited in her church attendance due to her job. I encouraged her last evening to begin a study so that she could grow in her faith.
Construction
The walls of the auditorium are almost complete. The next step is to cover the building with the 6 meter tiles that we have already purchased. The Lord has provided the materials to complete the work. Pray with us that we can see the necessary funds come in to have the tiles put in place. If you would like to help funds can be sent to Baptist Mid-Missions and earmark them for the Brazil Sorocaba Norte Building project.
Thank you taking a few moments to pray for the lost mentioned above and for our ministry to those who have accepted Christ.

Friends,
Bible Club and VBS Follow-up
Last week we went to each address given during VBS and invited the children to Bible Club and Sunday school. On Saturday new 5 kids from VBS showed up. On Sunday Donna's class was full with 20 children. Vitoria, who accepted Christ during VBS, came along with her older sister (18) Taimara. Our desire is to reach these families in our community. Pray with us!
Sunday Service
We held a brief "business meeting" with those that attend and asked their opinion to use collected funds toward a few construction projects. We are trying to encourage financial involvement and responsibility. Everyone seemed excited about contributing to the progress of construction.
As our service started on Sunday evening almost all of our chairs were taken and a few of us were standing. Shortly after the first song another family arrived. It was nice to see 54 people singing and worshiping the Lord.

Friends,
I hope that you are cheering for Brazil in the World Cup - well then at least for the USA!
Saturday, the 21st 27 children came for Bible club. We have had wonderful opportunities to share God's Word with numerous kids over the past few months. Many of these children come to Sunday School as well. As we see the
Lord work we also know that we must be cautious in how we encourage children to make decisions. Pray with us that true conviction of sin and a thorough understanding of faith in Christ's work will take place in the hearts of these children.
Our Sunday evening services have been full for the past month. New families, new converts and returning visitors have keep us running to get more chairs. Pray for the salvation of these adults: Andreza, Edmilson, Marcia, Franciele, Denilda, Osmar, Suelen, Bruno and Adao. Also pray for
these new adult converts: Douglas, Deborah, Fabiano, Virginia, Sueli, Alex
and Fernanda.
In just twelve days a missions team from Bible Baptist in Matthews, NC
will arrive. We have a number of outreach ministries planned as well as
construction for this team to accomplish during their stay. Pray for God to
work in the lives of Brazilians as well as this team.

Dear Friends,
The World Cup
Everything is green and yellow around town. Cars have Brazilian flags wrapped around them. People honk their horns (more than they usually do), dance in the streets and give high-fives to people they don’t even know. It’s the World Cup don’t you know?
On the day of Brazil’s game the town gets eerily quiet – hardly a car on the road –no one is walking on the streets…until Goooooooooooooal! Then the country erupts! If you didn’t know Brazil won the first game of the Cup.
Church
Tonight we had 7 visitors and 40 in the service. We need to make visits with Fabiano and Virginia’s family as well as Bruno and Andreza.
Construction
This past week the crew finished the metal structure and painted the areas were welding had been done. This week the gutters will go up along with the roofing. Once this is done we will need to get the block laid between metal columns so the wind will not take away our roofing.

My message this evening was about a pure heart, a grieved heart and a strong heart from Psalm 73. I started by taking my co-workers blood pressure and assuring everyone present that Ben had a heart.
The Lord has been working in the heart of Sueli through Bible study for the past two months. She has struggled with former "truths" she believed and the truth she has seen in God's Word. Tonight she described herself as having a "troubled heart."
But this evening at the end of the service she went out to speak with my wife, Donna. As soon as Donna sat down Sueli with eyes open began. "I confess Jesus as my Savior. I repent of my sin. There is no good work that I can do to be saved. Jesus is the only one that could take my place. I accept this Christ that for so many years I ignored. I believe the Word of God that for so many years I ignored." She proceeded to quote everything that she and Donna had ever studied in the past months. And then she said "please help me to know what to do to be saved."
Donna surprised at her contrition and confession said well I believe you just received Christ but let's pray right now. There is no greater joy to see the light of the gospel illuminate a sinner's heart.
Sueli is now the third person related to this family that has been saved in the last 11 months.
Rejoice!

Dear Friends,
A Monday Update should come on Monday but many times mine comes late. Today I have a good excuse as well as good reason to send a late update. Last week my computer decided to die. Sounds similar to "my dog ate my homework".
Since our family retreat in the first week in March I have been studying the Bible with Alex (16 years old). He was in church this past Sunday and today I completed a series on salvation with him. At the completion I shared that God has now challenged him with truth and what would he now do with God's truth. He said, "I want to accept Christ." "On Sunday I so desired to raise my hand and go forward but I didn't think the time was right." "Now I do." Alex prayed and repented of his sin and trusted Christ today. When leaving he turned and gave a hug to me and said thank you. You can pray for his father Adao with whom I have been doing Bibles studies with for about a year.
On Saturday we had 30 children attend our Kid's Club. Many of them do not understand the gospel completely and others we believe do but have not made decisions for Christ. Pray for these children.
Last week our counter tops and sink were installed in the kitchen of the church. The ladies are happy with the beautiful kitchen and the men are waiting for the next meal!
Thank you for praying for the people we work with each week.
